UOP 395 – Total Chloride in Petroleum Distillates by Colorimetry
This colorimetric method is for determining chloride in the range of 0.1 to 1 mass-ppm in liquid hydrocarbons that are free of hydrogen sulfide and low in total sulfur content. The method is not applicable to samples with sulfur levels that exceed 10 mass-ppm, or that are colored. UOP Method 588 can be used for chloride concentrations above 1 mass-ppm. Bromides and iodides, although rarely present, are calculated as chloride. Samples that are polymerized by sodium biphenyl (such as styrene) cannot be analyzed by this method. The method can be used to determine whether the chloride is organic or inorganic.
