ACI 351.1R – Grouting Between Foundations and Bases for Support of Equipment and Machinery
This report provides an overview of current practices forgrouting to support equipment and machinery. Recommendationsare provided for those portions of the grouting operationwhere a consensus could be developed among knowledgeablemanufacturers and users. Various approaches areoutlined for areas where opinions differ. Many statementsand much of the information contained in this report arebased on published manufacturers? data and observationsand practical experience by technical representatives andusers. There is little current published research available atthis time, but the information in this report is the most currentinformation available. This report describes materials andinstallation methods for grouts used as load-transfer materialbetween machine or equipment bases and their foundations.Characteristics of the placed material, test methodsfor forecasting their long-term performance, and installationprocedures are included. The information may also beappropriate for other types of applications where filling ofthe space between load-carrying members is required, suchas under column baseplates or in joints between precastconcrete elements.
Machinery and equipment that have precise tolerancesfor alignment or require uniform support cannot be placeddirectly on finished concrete surfaces. Both the concretesurface and the machine base have irregularities that resultin alignment difficulties and bearing load concentrations. For this reason, machine bases or soleplates are aligned andleveled by shimming or other means, and the resulting spacebetween the machine base and the foundation is filled with aload-transfer grout material. The load-transfer grout materialsmost frequently used are nonshrink cementitious grouts andnonshrink epoxy grouts.
